Can you believe it’s actually here? Show 55 has been sitting on the desk for ages. Then of course, you realise that the news is irrelevant, the gigs have already happened and while the music should get a play, I’m looking for something a little current.

Sunday rolls right ’round again so it’s time for another helping of the Playlist Mix. The fiftieth (five-oh) podcast hits the web a few hours later than expected, but in making up for it, there’s an addition nine (count em) tracks for you as the Playlist Mix marks its fiftieth show with fifteen tracks for your listening pleasure. Tied up in the mix this week is a healthy balance of acts from Ireland, the UK and US. There’s also a lot less chatter this week as it can be tricky (as one finds out) in cramming fifteen tracks into an hour of listening – oh the fun that was had in coming up with the mix last night! Long one of my favourite podsafe tracks featured since the podcast began, this track wound its way onto show number 4 and show number 15 (recapping 2007). They’re from New York, they’re currently wrapping up their new album and the track – Countdown – seemingly appeared in the season three premiere of Heroes? Check out Jupiter One on MySpace

Your second of 46 tracks for lent is this rock nugget from Hundred Year Storm, ‘Crash And Burn’. I’d previously used the track on the second Playlist Mix podcast and looking back now, I can’t remember why I didn’t include the track on the christmas compilation of that year (2007) though it did go on to make the directors cut.

They started things off together in 2003, made a self titled release in 2004 and clocked up over 400 live shows between there and 2007. The sound of the band has changed a small bit in that time but fans should be happy to know they’ve a new LP on the way (announcement as of last week) with Dollhouse Inc. (Windows and Orphans, Knockout Kings, etc.) putting the record out. Check them on on MySpace or get a bunch of different tracks on PureVolume. You’ll find this track (download link below) as track 11 on the album ‘Hello, From The Children Of Planet Earth‘, released in 2006 on Floodgate Records.

Back when the podcast was a brain fart on a Sunday night, almost two years ago now, I’d been doing some digging around for some podsafe music and came across this gem of a track.

It’s a long one, ringing up at the post six-minute mark but it’s got a great feel to it. Very Radiohead inspired, reminding me of some of the Pablo Honey releases. They’ve been quiet (on the web front) over the bulk of the past year but last month they got around to uploading a new track, We Won’t Let You Drown, on the Infotourist MySpace.

Headquartered in Kingston, Ontario, Canada you can also find them on Infotourist.org.

This gem, ‘Have I Gone Astray’ is your first of 46 tracks for lent and is taken from Infotourist’s ‘Selected Case Studies’

Heritage Centre, who were featured on Playlist Mix 46, have released ‘The City, The Tree & The Fox’ to the public, the EP release hitting shops and the web on Friday gone.

This is a great release. The music is totally infectious with non of your indie-pop crap. It makes for great listening and great repeat-listening at that as well. The launch gig in Whelan’s in Dublin was a sell-out and the band go on to play Dolan’s in Limerick this Friday night. ‘You Are Something’ makes for a great start and the quality of performance and writing doesn’t dip at all throughout with ‘Death By Science’, the TV-friendly ‘Losing Touch’, the much edgier ‘Stars’, ‘Somehow I Feel Cheated’ and ‘Your Leaders are Dead’ all on the cards. Consider them firmly chalked down on the list of Irish bands to see in action this year.
