Shortlisted For 2009 Irish Web Awards

The shortlists for the 2009 Realex Payments Irish Web Awards came out before the weekend and the Playlist Mix has found its way onto the shortlist, with judging currently underway of all entries. I’m delighted to see the podcast there again this year as we get back in the swing of things following the summer break (as every other year).

This year has been a year of change for the podcast, certainly bringing in a lot more Irish music, launching a new version of the site, delivering the podcasts via Blubrry, working around a legal hurdle or two, exploring options on syndication and a lot more besides.

Moving into the end of 2009 there’s a few more changes and developments to come the way of the Playlist Mix so if you’re not already subscribed to the podcast, now is the perfect opportunity to do so! PLM took home the award for Best Podcast last year so to be included in the running again is a great boost. The category itself is sponsored by 3 Ireland and joining the Playlist Mix on the shortlist are RTE Podcasts, Nialler9, The Persuaders, Michael Hanley, The Comic Cast, Hostelworld Podcasts, Chopshop FM, Devious Theatre, Mixtape.ie, Panic Dots and View From The Quad.

If you can turn up the bass, turn up the bass, you might need it for this one. You can also download the track here via EmpireSocial.com and follow Empire Social on Twitter.

Playlist Mix #30

Playlist Mix #30A bit later than normal, or at least later than last week, the 30th Playlist Mix podcast lands “by the skin of its teeth” while we still have a few minutes left in Tuesday night here in Ireland. Of course, if you’re in the US or further west then you’re laughing!

A nice milestone podcast to reach is number 30! Don’t forget to vote for your favourite band from this week’s mix, last week’s top vote going to The Most Serene Republic.

For the 30th podcast you’ve got music from

Don’t forget too, you can get in touch with the podcast by emailing podcast@playlistmix.com. You could also drop by the Playlist Mix MySpace, leave a comment below, click here to contact the show or even subscribe via iTunes or via RSS!

Playlist Mix #29

Playlist Mix 29 featuring The Most Serene RepublicSome things in life are a certainty. Liverpool win again in Europe and the Playlist Mix lands again on a Tuesday night. This week it’s show 29 with more independent music for you from the US, the UK, Canada and Japan.

There’s also a new addition to PlaylistMix.com – check the homepage or individual pages (like this one) and you’ll find the new Playlist Mix Poll where I’m asking you to vote each week for your favourite act! All you’ve to do is click the name of your favourite act from this week’s show and cast your vote – couldn’t be easier.

For the moment we’ll look at finding out who your favourite bands are from each week’s mix, what type of music you’re into but more importantly, when it comes to the milestone shows things can turn around on the podcast – rather than showcasing my favourites, lets pick up YOUR favourites so you can again have your say!

You can cast your vote for any of the following acts on this week’s show…

Don’t forget – get in touch if you can by emailing podcast@playlistmix.com and if you’re a newcomer to the Playlist Mix, maybe you’d like to subscribe to the podcast feed?

Until next week…

Playlist Mix #23

Playlist Mix 23 featuring A Band Called QuinnBang on time this week comes the 23rd Playlist Mix podcast. Six more new tracks from six international acts once again with music coming from the UK, US, Canada and Ireland. There’s also the return of two of my favourite acts to the podcast – A Band Called Quinn and Heroin Skinny.

You’ll get to hear the title track from the new ABCQ EP which launches on Thursday March 6th at the Apple Store in Glasgow as well as five other top-drawer songs from independent artists.

This week you’re treated to music from

Here’s to hoping you enjoy the latest offering from the podcast! Many thanks to those of you who listen on a weekly or regular basis and to those of you who are completely new to the podcast, welcome!

Playlist Mix #22

Playlist Mix 22 featuring Eagle SeagullA day late, a buck short…. well in fairness, it’s not THAT late, about 10 hours or so but the Playlist Mix returns once again with a weekly dose of independent music for your listening pleasure.

I’m chalking the delay down to a radio appearance last night cutting into my recording time, that and the fact that the house (and subsequently Studio B) was an absolute ice box.

Flash forward to Wednesday morning and the show gets recorded with the aid of several cups of tea and the world is back to normal!

This week you’ve got the pleasure of listening to

  • 01:23 – Kole – ‘The Weakness’
  • 06:25 – Paradise – ‘In Circles’
  • 09:56 – Flee The Seen – ‘Wire Tap Out’
  • 12:38 – Faze – ‘All You Need’
  • 17:49 – Pulling Thorns – ‘Question Marks & Turn Signals’
  • 23:08 – Eagle Seagull – ‘Your Beauty Is A Knife I Turn In My Throat’

As always, if you’d like to comment on the podcast, submit news, gig dates, new music and the likes then drop me an email to podcast@playlistmix.com or find me on MySpace by visiting myspace.com/playlistpodcast.

Until next week…. enjoy!

Playlist Mix #20

Playlist Mix 20 featuring How To Win At LifeThe 20th Playlist Mix podcast rolls around with another six acts for your listening pleasure.

This week sees four acts from the US, one from Liverpool in the UK and one from Seoul in Korea!

Studio B had it’s hardware upgrade (for the podcasting section) last week and I’m still getting to grips with the new ProTools setup (I had a run at the weekend with some recording) so I reckon by the next show we should be running at full power audio-wise.

Here’s this week’s playlist…

Don’t forget – if you enjoy the show, let me know what you think by leaving a comment, or dropping by the MySpace. You can also email tracks and band news to podcast@playlistmix.com for inclusion in future shows. If you’re a BluBrry user, the podcast is also available on the BluBrry network by clicking here.

Playlist Mix 13 Waits Until Next Week

This week in the land of Ken is honestly “one of those weeks” and I’m run ragged. I managed enough time earlier in the week to sneak in the Sound System Podcast with KilkennyMusic.com but it was either that one or this one takes a break this week and this time around it has to be the Playlist Mix.

I’m working into the night every day this week bar tomorrow (Thursday) with a night off work as I’m hosting a music night in Kilkenny and performing as well (you’ll hear clips on my other podcast show next week).

I’ve the tracks already lined up (and have had) for show #13 but don’t have the time until the weekend to lock everything down so I’m afraid you’ll just have to listen back to previous shows!

Personal favourites of mine so far are Playlist Mix #10 (download) which picked up a nice review from one Bernie Goldbach, Playlist Mix #7 (download) with a strong blend of Irish acts and Playlist Mix #4 (download) largely in part to the opening tune from Jupiter One.

Until next week, enjoy the reruns!
